Canyon Ultimate CF Pro Return to Timeline
First try at carbon fiber and not disappointed. Progress is good. Steel still has my favorite aesthetic and ride qualities, but carbon's lightness and stiffness (without excessive fatigue due to road vibration) work well to give an excellent overall feel to the bike.
I kitted this frame with earlier vintage Record 10 carbon parts. I prefer these to the newer 11 speed groups, both aesthetically and mechanically. The shifting is smooth, quiet, fast, and precise. The levers fit my hands better than other vintages and brands, including the newer ones. They're light and sleek, with all cables hidden. The white text against the bare carbon looks fantastic. The acme of shifting aesthetics and performance.
[The 11 speed are a tad less precise, and the lever bodies fit my hands less well. Shimano's look great but pinch my fingers when riding the hoods (my preferred position) and can rattle like crazy on the rough roads I tend to ride. Truth be told, I haven't given SRAM a fair chance, but that is in my plans. I like the guiding principles of their mechanics and the aesthetics are pretty good....not Campagnolo's artistry, but good. More on that, if n + 1 has anything to say about it.]
The frame is for sale for just one reason: Wheelbase is 99 cm. That makes for quick handling. I prefer a longer wheelbase, 101 cm or more, for stable handling. Stability over reactivity. This is a bike for a racer.
Apart from that, this is an excellent frame. Light, stiff, comfortable, and excellent rider position. Somehow, the aesthetics are also very pleasing and balanced. And I don't usually like white bikes.
Photos to come.
Best Rides:
Fleche-Wallone 2016--Louvain-La Hulpe-Louvain (all seasons in a day)
Tour of Flanders 2015
Paris Roubaix 2015
