The Bike I Got
That Year
1972

Merckx wins 4th TdF.I learned to ride a bike.  Hot dog!  I don't recall what bike...
1973

Ocana wins TdF.We move to France and, two years later, to Holland.

Biking is great in both places, and I see my first bike race....and take my first motorcycle rides (don't tell my parents).

My Stingray, my parents' Peugeot 102 and 103 mopeds, along with bows and arrows, are far and away my favorite "toys."
Red Fender Bike
1976
Amazing Olympic year!

We enjoy the summer games with the Tierney cousins in West Haven.  Uncle Ray's tv was surrounded!
After winning stunning 7th Milan-San Remo, Merckx is in decline.

Van Impe wins TdF.
We move to California.

We enjoy time in Conn and Chapaqua with family and friends before setting out for SoCal in our new Buick Century.  What a trip!
1979

Bianchi puts out their first Superleggera, my dream bike and still, to my eye, the most beautiful bike ever made.My first restoration and success at the mechanics.
1981

1985

I see Eddy Merckx bikes for the first time and wonder who that unsmiling guy is on the head tube.  Yes, that's Merckx, I could figure that much out, but who is he?  Bought my first Italian road bike from fancy Colnago boutique in Newport Beach.  I got the Celo Europa model because it seemed very exotic to me.  (After all these years, I still go for exotic.)

Victory on the Puy de Dome.  Francois became my domestique that day. He ate and drank like Anquetil the night before, so he should be neither surprised nor bitter.

The fastest, strongest ride of my life one late afternoon from the Barn to Laguiole, and back via Soulages.  I'll never forget the feeling.  Maybe accidentally ingested amphetamines.  (That's a joke.)

After a beating at Tour of Flanders, this light, stiff, unforgiving bike was moved along to Filippo, whose youth and vigor could make it comply.

My Corsa 01 carried me to victory (my definition) in Roubaix twice, Flanders twice and bitter defeat in Liege.

Due to headset pitting on my Corsa 01, this stiff Canyon was my back up bike for Tour of Flanders and Flèche Wallone.  Ouch!  But fast.Canyon Ultimate CF Pro

In a last-ditch effort to have a new bike experience in Belgium before heading to India.  Definitely a psycho-logical affair but entirely satisfactory.Merckx Mourenx '69

The most beautiful Merckx frame, I couldn't resist.  I realize that I do not need another bike.Merckx Corsa Extra 1985
